What is Coal Plant Pollution?

Coal-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of air pollution, pumping out dangerous amounts of carbon dioxide, mercury, sulfur, and nitrous oxide each day.

According to a study by Abt Associates, over 30,000 people a year die from airborne particles caused by coal plant pollution. In more highly polluted areas such as Texas, coal plants are shown to dramatically shorten residents' life spans, and put them in imminent danger of frequently fatal heart and lung problems. The toxic sulfates in the air are especially hazardous to children and senior citizens, as well as those with previously existing respiratory conditions such as asthma.

In addition, coal plants are a major factor in the global warming crisis as well, being one of the leading contributors of carbon dioxide.

This problem could easily be fixed by installing scrubbers and other guards to catch these pollutants before they hit the air. This technology is already available, cheap, and efficient, and is already being employed by some of the more health-conscious companies. Several states are also calling for mandatory mercury reduction, which is forcing many companies to build newer and cleaner plants.

These concepts need to be pushed much, much further in order to save lives and the planet. Contact your state legislature to make sure that maximum effort is being put into cleaning the air of this unnecessary and deadly pollution.
